Identity Is Everything: Discover Who You Really Are in Christ

Who are youโ€”really?

Itโ€™s a simple question.
But for many people, itโ€™s one of the hardest to answer.

Are you defined by:

  • Your career?
  • Your past?
  • Your relationships?
  • Your feelings?

In his powerful message โ€œIdentity is Everything,โ€ Dr. Robi Sonderegger challenges us to rethink how we answer that questionโ€”and why it matters more than we realize.ย

Because hereโ€™s the truth:

If you donโ€™t know who you are, youโ€™ll never fully understand why youโ€™re hereโ€”or what youโ€™re worth.

Identity Determines Purpose and Value

Dr. Robi made this foundational point early in the message:

If you know who you are โ†’ you discover why you’re here
If you know why you’re here โ†’ you understand your valueย

That means identity isnโ€™t just philosophicalโ€”itโ€™s practical.

It shapes:

  • Your decisions
  • Your relationships
  • Your confidence
  • Your direction in life

Without clarity in identity, life becomes confusing, reactive, and unstable.

The Problem: We Build Identity on the Wrong Things

Most people define themselves based on external or temporary factors:

  • Physical appearance
  • Job titles or achievements
  • Nationality or background
  • Relationship status

But Dr. Robi pointed out something importantโ€”none of these truly answer the question of who we are.

Even science shows how interconnected humanity really is. Weโ€™re more alike than we think, part of one human familyโ€”not divided by identity labels as much as culture suggests.ย

So if those things donโ€™t define usโ€ฆ

Then what does?

You Are Made in the Image of God

The Bible gives a clear answer:

You are created in the image of God.

Psalm 139 says we are โ€œfearfully and wonderfully made,โ€ meaning:

  • Designed with intention
  • Set apart as unique
  • Created with purposeย

This is the foundation of identity.

Not what youโ€™ve done.
Not what others say.
Not how you feel.

But whose image you bear.

The Three Questions of Identity

Dr. Robi breaks identity into three key perspectives:

1. How Do You See Yourself?

This is where many people struggle.

Labelsโ€”especially negative onesโ€”can shape identity:

  • โ€œIโ€™m anxiousโ€
  • โ€œIโ€™m brokenโ€
  • โ€œIโ€™m a failureโ€

But hereโ€™s the problem:

You are not your feelings.

Feelings are realโ€”but they are not reliable indicators of identity.

As Dr. Robi explained, we donโ€™t follow our feelingsโ€”we inform them.ย

If you build your identity on emotions, your life will constantly shift.

2. How Do Others See You?

What people think about us matters more than we realize.

Thereโ€™s a powerful psychological principleโ€”people often rise to the level of belief placed on them.

Dr. Robi illustrated this through research showing that when teachers believed students were gifted, those students actually performed betterโ€”even when it wasnโ€™t true.ย

This reveals something important:

Belief shapes behavior.

Thatโ€™s why surrounding yourself with the right voices matters.

3. How Does God See You?

This is the most important question of all.

Because God doesnโ€™t see you based on your past, your failures, or your labels.

He sees:

  • Potential
  • Purpose
  • Redemption

Just like a sculptor sees a masterpiece inside a block of stone.

The Power of Godโ€™s โ€œBrandโ€ on Your Life

One of the most powerful ideas in this message is this:

You carry Godโ€™s name.

Scripture says God has placed His seal on usโ€”His mark of ownership.ย

That means:

  • You represent Him
  • You carry His authority
  • You reflect His image

And when we disconnect from that identity, we lose influence and clarity.

But when we embrace it, everything changes.

The Turning Point: A New Identity in Christ

Hereโ€™s the good news.

While we may all fall short, make mistakes, and carry brokennessโ€ฆ

God doesnโ€™t leave us there.

Through Jesus, we are given a completely new identity.

Dr. Robi explains it this way:

We donโ€™t just โ€œfindโ€ identity in Christ.

Christ comes to live in us.

And when that happens:

  • We become a new creation
  • We are restored
  • We are redefined

God no longer sees us through our past.

He sees us through Christ.

When You Know Who You Are, Everything Changes

When identity becomes clear:

  • Confidence increases
  • Purpose becomes obvious
  • Fear loses its grip
  • Influence grows naturally

You donโ€™t have to force impact.

People will begin to see something different in you.

As Dr. Robi shared, when you truly understand your identity, you become a natural witness of Godโ€™s presenceโ€”without even trying.ย
