“Freedom isn’t just something that can be legislated. You can live in a free country and still live in bondage.”
Those words from clinical psychologist Dr. Robi Sonderegger set the tone for one of the most thought-provoking messages in Elevate Life Church’s America 250 series.
Rather than focusing only on politics or patriotism, Dr. Robi challenged us to consider a deeper question:
What actually makes a nation free?
His answer was both biblical and practical: before America can truly be great, it must first be godly.
Freedom Is More Than Government
Many people define freedom as the absence of rules or restrictions.
But Scripture paints a much richer picture.
Quoting 1 Corinthians 10:23, Dr. Robi reminded us that while “everything is permissible,” not everything is beneficial. Real freedom isn’t simply having unlimited choices—it’s having the wisdom, love, and self-control to choose what leads to life.
That’s why biblical freedom always begins with maturity.
The Four Stages of Freedom
One of the most memorable moments of the message was Dr. Robi’s explanation of four stages of freedom from a psychological perspective.
1. Low Freedom
A person is controlled by outside forces or internal struggles and has very little ability to govern themselves.
2. Negative Freedom
The freedom to do whatever you want. While appealing on the surface, this kind of freedom often leads to harmful consequences because it lacks self-restraint.
3. Positive Freedom
The ability to willingly embrace healthy disciplines, boundaries, and habits that produce long-term growth.
4. High Freedom
The highest level of maturity—having complete freedom while choosing self-control because you love God and others.
This final stage reflects the kind of freedom Jesus offers through the Gospel.
Self-Governance Produces Lasting Freedom
America’s founders believed that liberty could only survive if citizens first learned to govern themselves.
The Constitution could protect freedom, but it could never create character.
Character must come from families, churches, and individuals who willingly submit themselves to God’s authority.
That’s why Dr. Robi argued that America’s greatest challenge today isn’t simply political—it’s spiritual.
The Gospel Gives Us True Freedom
The message also connected America’s story to the story of salvation.
Jesus didn’t come merely to remove our sin.
He came to restore our relationship with God.
Through what Dr. Robi called the “beautiful exchange,” Christ willingly took our place on the cross so we could become children of God.
That invitation is never forced.
God offers freedom, but He allows each person to freely choose Him.
This is the ultimate picture of mature freedom.
Freedom Requires Responsibility
One of the strongest leadership principles throughout the sermon was this:
The higher your responsibility, the fewer personal rights you cling to.
Whether leading a family, serving in church, running a business, or influencing a community, true leaders willingly sacrifice personal comfort for the good of others.
Leadership isn’t demanding more freedom.
Leadership is choosing greater responsibility.
Why Character Matters
Dr. Robi warned that constitutions, governments, and laws cannot preserve freedom without people of integrity.
Healthy families.
Strong marriages.
Faithful parents.
People who keep their word.
Neighbors who genuinely love one another.
These are the building blocks of lasting liberty.
America’s strength has never been found only in documents.
It’s found in the character of its people.
Love What God Loves
Near the end of the message, Dr. Robi shared a powerful insight from psychology.
People naturally protect what they love.
Instead of manipulating the next generation through fear or guilt, Christians should help them genuinely fall in love with God, His truth, and the blessings of freedom.
Love produces stewardship.
Stewardship preserves legacy.
The Challenge for Every Believer
The message concluded with a simple but challenging question:
“Now that you’ve been given freedom… what will you do with it?”
God hasn’t simply set us free from something.
He has set us free for something.
